Hello. I am the welding teacher at Dinuba High School and I am glad that you are reading about me and my class polices and expectations. Below is a complete breakdown of my classroom and shop rules along with expectations for the students in my classes. I have also added, at the end, a copy of this year’s syllabus for the classes that I am teaching. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Welding Class Expectations

Classroom & Lab Rules:

  1. Safety, Safety, Safety
  2. Respect: Self, Classmates, Staff, Property
  3. Maintain a positive learning environment

 

Classroom Expectations and Participation:

  • be on time and prepared daily with class binder with dividers, lined paper, pen/pencil
  • active listening in all situations and take notes
  • complete all classroom/lab assignments on time
  • participate in class discussions and activities; raise of hand to offer input
  • it is expected that all students take pride in the care of the classroom

 

Behavior:

  • friendliness and respect for others - no student has the right to disrupt the learning of anyone else
  • put forth your BEST effort
  • respect yourself, others, and school property
  • No offensive language, comments, arguing, or horseplay.
  • do not leave class before the bell rings, nor linger outside the building doors.
  • each student will be responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of his or her work area.
  • students will not stand in the doorway at the end of class time, all students will sit in the classroom until the bell rings
  • do not interrupt learning by using your cell phone, texting or posting online during class/lab 
  • Violations to the classroom rules/behavioral problems will be handled by the school discipline procedures. Violations to the welding shop rules that put any students or shop equipment at risk will be subject to discipline depending on severity of the event.

 

 

Assignments: 

Ø  Turn in all assignments on time. Students can turn in work up to one class period late for full credit, after which they have four class periods to turn in the assignment and receive half credit.

Ø  Assignments that are more than five class periods late will not be accepted.

Ø  Please ask questions if assignments are unclear. The final responsibility for misunderstandings and late work rests with the student.

 

Absences:

Ø  Good attendance is expected so that you can advance your welding skills. If you have to be absent, follow the makeup policy! If you are absent, YOU are responsible for missed work.

Ø  Makeup assignments up to the number of days that they were absent for excused absences.

Ø  Any student with an unexcused absence will not have the opportunity to make up work.

WELDING LAB SAFETY RULES

Ø  All students will take a comprehensive written safety Test and pass it with 100% accuracy, before any lab work can take place.

Ø  Proper clothing must be worn in the shop at all times:

Ø  students will keep long hair tied up, in the front and the back, bangs will not hang in front of eyes while in the Lab

Ø  Loose fitting shirts must be tucked in

Ø  ties, rings, necklaces, and other jewelry must be removed

Ø  closed toe shoes or work boots must be worn – no exceptions

Ø  long denim/khaki pants are required- No synthetic materials

Ø  safety glasses must be worn at all times – no exceptions

 

Working in the Lab

All students will meet in the classroom each day for roll call, once roll call has been taken, the students may be dismissed to the lab.  Students should only take 5 minutes to dress out and be in their work area. Students may be assigned a work area in the lab, and a desk in the classroom, students will only use his or her assigned area or classroom desk.

 

Ø  There will be ABSOLUTELY NO HORSEPLAY in the shop. These can be dangerous environments and I will not tolerate risks to student safety.

Ø  guards and protective devices must not be remove from any machine and must be used at all times.

Ø  unattended machines must not be left running.

Ø  lab areas must be cleaned daily. (welding –cutting areas).

Ø  any machine or equipment not working properly must be reported to the instructor at once.

Ø  students will not operate machines or equipment until they have received safety and operational instructions.

Ø  fire extinguishers are to be used only for extinguishing fires.

Ø  report all accidents to the instructor at once, no matter how serious.

Ø  no horseplay in the shop will be tolerated.

Ø  do not weld on tables. No exceptions.

Ø  welding rods and stubs will be placed in the proper receptacle each day.

Ø  students will not remove any parts from machinery and/or equipment without instructor permission.

Ø  no food or drink allowed in the lab and locker room area.

Ø  there will be no tobacco use in the lab at any time.

Ø  students will not abuse machinery and/or equipment at any time.

Ø  students will not talk to or distract other students that are using equipment and/or machinery.

Ø  ear plugs must be used when grinding.

Ø  school supplied welding hoods will be returned to the proper location at the end of each period.

Ø  leather sleeves and aprons will be returned to the proper cabinet at the end of each period.

Ø  all tools will be returned to the proper place at the end of each period.

 

Welding/MAG 41 Course Syllabus

Course Description:

This course covers the theory, fundamentals, basic processes and practical application of welding. Emphasis is placed on understanding the safe and proper techniques applicable to various welding operations. Reactions/metallurgical changes in weld and base material will be examined for influence of structural integrity in fabrications. The various types and structural shapes of materials will be covered including basic identification and procurement of the materials. Discussions and demonstrations will cover the Oxyfuel, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc, and gas tungsten arc welding processes. Career exploration within the welding field will be covered to provide a clear and broad understanding of where a future in welding can lead.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

  • Understand the basic weld joints, weld types, weld defects, weld positions, and weld testing
  • Understand the various components and equipment of the Oxyfuel gas welding process, Shielded Metal Arc Welding process, Gas Metal Arc Welding process and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process.
  • Understand the components and equipment for both Oxyfuel cutting and Plasma arc cutting processes.
  • Interpret basic blue prints and weld symbols
  • Understand basic metallurgy and properties of various metals
  • Discover career opportunities in the welding industry

 

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define welding
  • Recognize possible safety hazards in the welding shop
  • Select and properly safety equipment appropriate to working conditions
  • Recognize and evaluate potential safety hazards and react appropriately
  • Name and identify the various welding and cutting processes currently used in industry
  • Demonstrate the safe and proper procedures for start up, operation, and shut down of the Oxyfuel Welding process, Shielded Metal Arc Welding process, Gas Metal Arc Welding process and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process.
  • Demonstrate the safe and proper procedures for start up, operation, and shut down for both Oxyfuel cutting and Plasma Arc Cutting processes.
  • Demonstrate the safe and proper operation of various hand tools, ironworker, band saw, drill press and pedestal grinder.

 

Grading Procedures:

                        40% Lab work                          15% Class assignments

                        20% Quizzes/Tests                  15% Final test

                        5% Attendance                        5% Participation

 

Class Assignments: All assignments will be turned in on the day designated during class time for the course. Late work will be accepted at a reduced value. Students will be allowed to make up assignments up to the number of days that they were absent as long as the absence was excused. Students with an unexcused absence will not have the opportunity to make up work.

All written work will be evaluated on the following criteria:

Please ask questions if assignments are unclear. The final responsibility for misunderstandings and late work rests with the student.

Lab Work grade is based on the following criteria:

  • Weld consistency, integrity, positioning, presentation, size and quality
  • Proper use of material and supplies
  • The ability to demonstrate safe job practices and good work habits
  • The ability to follow written and oral instruction and following classroom/lab rules
  • The ability to perform tasks within a reasonable amount of time

 

Points will be assigned for each student’s work. The total points obtained throughout the course will then be

 

evaluated according to the following chart:

A         90-100%                     

B          80-90%

C         70-80%                       

D         60-70%

F         0-60%

 

Unexcused absences are NOT “OK”. Discussion questions, safety instruction, and instruction on equipment and instruments are all valuable and should not be missed. Absences cause expensive wear and tear on equipment, supplies and facility. Demonstrations on equipment and technique may not be given over.

Housekeeping:

Students will be expected to perform ongoing cleaning and minor caretaking of equipment in the laboratory. All clean up procedures should be performed before leaving the welding lab.
